What is Rust?
Rust is an open-world survival game where players start with almost nothing and have to survive in a harsh environment. You gather resources, craft tools, build bases, and interact with other players.
The world is dangerous. Wild animals, radiation, scientists, and especially other players can all become a threat. Every decision matters: trust someone and make a friend, or betray them and take their loot. Both happen regularly.
There is no fixed goal in Rust. You decide how you want to play.
What can you do in Rust?
Gather Resources
Start by collecting:
- Wood from trees
- Stone from rocks
- Hemp plants for cloth
- Food to stay alive
These resources are used to craft better tools, weapons, and your first base.
Build a Base
A safe base is one of the most important things in Rust.
You can:
- Build small starter bases
- Upgrade walls and doors
- Add locks to protect your loot
- Expand your base over time
Remember: If you don't protect your base well enough, other players may raid it.
Explore the Map
The map is filled with interesting places called Monuments.
Examples include:
- Airfield
- Harbor
- Water Treatment Plant
- Launch Site
- Military Tunnels
These locations contain valuable loot, but they are often dangerous and heavily contested by other players.
Craft and Progress
As you collect resources and scrap, you can unlock:
- Better tools
- Stronger weapons
- Armor
- Electricity systems
- Vehicles
- Farming equipment
The more you progress, the more options become available.
Play Solo or With Friends
Rust can be played however you like:
- Survive alone as a lone wolf
- Team up with friends
- Trade with neighbors
- Start wars with other groups
- Become a farmer, builder, or PvP expert
There is no "correct" way to play.
Beginner Tips
1. Build a sleeping bag early
This allows you to respawn near your base instead of somewhere random.
2. Secure your base quickly
A wooden door with a lock is much better than leaving your loot outside. The local wildlife appreciates free storage, but other players appreciate it even more.
3. Don't trust everyone immediately
Some players are friendly. Some are not. Rust is famous for teaching this lesson repeatedly.
4. Keep your inventory small when exploring
Only take what you are willing to lose.
5. Learn from every death
Everyone dies in Rust. A lot. Even experienced players lose fights, get raided, or make mistakes.
